Profile / Self-Untertanding

KUNA e.V. positions itself within the field of sustainable development as an educational and cultural actor with a clear societal mission: transformation processes cannot be achieved solely through programs, technology, or regulation, but through learning and development processes that strengthen the capacity to act, provide orientation, and foster responsibility. From this perspective, the association understands sustainable development as the interplay of knowledge, attitudes, relationships, and institutional frameworks.

KUNA e.V.’s profile is shaped by the integration of adult education, cultural education, and education for sustainable development. This integration is not additive, but conceptual in nature: cultural education opens pathways to perception, expression, and interpretation; adult education enables reflective learning processes that build on life and professional experience; education for sustainable development structures societal challenges along lines of conflicting goals, future-oriented questions, and options for action. KUNA e.V. draws on these perspectives to create learning spaces that address both subject-specific content and the ability to orient oneself and make decisions. Its working approach is designed to address complex issues in ways that can become effective within organizations, networks, and communities. This includes not only implementing formats but also working conceptually: topics are contextualized, target groups precisely defined, theories of change formulated, and appropriate didactic approaches selected. The association pursues an approach that explicitly considers compatibility with public funding logics, institutional requirements, and cooperation structures.

In its self-understanding, collaboration with diverse stakeholders plays a central role. Cooperation is not viewed merely as a resource for implementation, but as a marker of quality: perspectives from public administration, education, culture, civil society, and research are incorporated into the development of content and formats. This results in offerings that are academically grounded, address real needs, and at the same time remain flexible enough to be applicable in different contexts.

Another defining feature of the profile is its orientation toward long-term impact. Sustainable development requires continuity: topics must be revisited, deepened, and placed in relation to one another. The association creates structures that extend beyond individual project durations, for example through recurring formats, documented insights, and networks that can continue working independently. In this way, the profile is defined not only by individual measures, but by a coherent and transparent working logic.
